Geoff and I saw this on the news and we were both absolutely outraged by it. Basically, and I’m paraphrasing (this linked article doesn’t give the updated info), the story goes that this high school year old girl told her volleyball coach about some party that had some underage drinking going on. One of the other students, Leddy, 18, who is part of the varsity football team, started posting stuff on Facebook referencing to killing the girl and physically harming her. He was banned from one football game, and then the school decided to lift the ban.
Are you f***king kidding me? An 18-year-old (legally adult) male can publicly post threats about killing a teenage girl and get off the hook because he’s a f’king football player? People in the town are defending this doofus because he’s an athlete? He’s pissed because he got caught for his stupid-ass underage drinking? Her parents dropped the charges against him (WHAT THE FUCKKKK?!?)? The people of this town are upset because this young girl is “ruining his football career and his senior year” by bringing his unjustifiable actions to light. Think about that statement for a moment — boy makes death threats to girl. Girl (obviously) is concerned and alerts officials. Girl gets blamed. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
We wonder why we have a horrible dilemma in our society regarding personal responsibility and respect to those around us. Kids like Leddy are making threats to “do some killin’” and getting a slap on the wrist because he’s a meathead who can make a touchdown? And what about the girl? He’s not allowed to be around her or have contact with her, sure, but do you really think she feels like she can trust the adults (Parents?Teachers? Principal? …Anyone?) in her community to take a stand for what’s right and good?
And not only high school athletes — what about the college athletes and coaches (around here, The Ohio State Buckeyes have a pretty consistent track record of doing everything but following the rules) and professional athletes. No matter how many women are battered, how many animals are abused, how many threats are made, and how many lies these people are caught in, we put them on a pedestal because they can run faster and jump higher and score more points than you or I?
Maybe my hormones are just out of whack? Or maybe we all need to stop for a second and look at why (too many) young men in America think it’s okay to threaten, beat, and undervalue our women. /end rant
