More.

  1. Cool intimidation stance, bros.
  2. At one point, Sage ran inside a shop to get us a couple of drinks and while I was waiting by our bikes, I noticed that across the [empty] street, there was a line of officers with their clubs out for a good half block. No helmets, just weapons. More aggressive intimidation by the cops.
  3. Protest signs. There was a huge age range out yesterday.
  4. During the speeches at Grant Park.
  5. I didn’t even realize Jesse Jackson was around and was just snapping away at some other things when he got in my frame. Meh. Dude needed some sunglasses.
  6. Protest signs.

Didn’t get a lot of great shots at the NATO rally on Sunday — it was hot and crowded and the police kept pushing us along. So. Meh. I wish the photos could do justice of just how many cops were surrounding us…

  1. Empty CTA busses lined the streets prepared to transport the arrested. They were all flashing “Chicago is my kind of town” on their marquees. Creepy.
  2. Protest sign during the march.
  3. Cops kept a tight line between the protesters and everyone else. They weren’t letting anyone in or out of the march.
  4. Thumbs up.
  5. At one point I looked behind me and this is what I saw. Since I was just coming up over the highway on Jackson, this is the tip of the iceberg as to how many cops were actually following the black bloc (yeah, I was behind them whoops).

americawakiewakie(Occupy Chicago/NATO Protests)  What is your threshold? When will you fight?

This is all we talked about at work today. Turns out that a lot more of my friends ended up downtown yesterday as well, which makes me really happy.

First the cops shove you, then hit you in the face with a baton. Happening now in Chicago.

NATO Protests

I’ve been downtown all day. It’s been peaceful but with a horrifying overtone because of the immense amount of riot police and other officers. It’s scary right now. Riot cops are buckling their helmets.

Don’t watch the news, get on social media. The news is calling these people anarchists and troublemakers. “These people” are us.

This is the saddest thing I have ever seen. Fuck the tyrants. Fuck the over reaction from the police. Fuck the tear gas and the cannons and the lines of empty busses on the streets to hold the arrested. Fuck NATO for bringing this the city I love.

I’m emotional. I’ve read and seen the things, but never have experienced them to the extent I have today. I feel like part of my innocence has been taken away. Logically, I knew about all of it, but admittedly put it in the back of my mind. I can’t anymore.

Stay safe tonight, Chicago. I love you.

Civilians Get Hit by Police During NATO Protests

THIS IS FUCKING IMPORTANT. Multiple reports and video of a police van driving through civilians tonight.

…Back to Chicago; it’s never dull out there. You never know exactly what kind of terrible shit is going to come down on you in that town, but you can always count on *something*. Every time I go to Chicago I come away with scars. Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72

Sage and I went downtown tonight. Biked the grid but saw nothing. I’m pretty sure we missed everything by just a few blocks. CRAZY amount of cops and secret servie everywhere — even saw the most intense CPD motorcade coming up the Dan Ryan. Downtown felt deserted, even creepy. Headed back down in the morning. Most important tip: Know your rights.

Okay, tomorrow.
All of my friends are horrified to go downtown this weekend, BUT… I would really prefer to go be a part of it. So, really, let’s meet up — either bike downtown or take the L.
Two particular events of interest: Mass G8/NATO protest and the Shadow Summit for Afghani Women’s Rights.
